Infrastructure


Infrastructure Laboratories ensure services and testing, measurements, research and experimentation, in laboratory and in the field, on rail materials, components, products, systems and subsystems (infrastructure, energy, command-control etc.), as well as for environmental pollution and safety at work (noise, electromagnetic emissions, vibration, ionizing radiation, etc.), using both stationary and mobile laboratories.
The Laboratories are accredited by ACCREDIA no. 0163. Accreditation involves verifying the Laboratory's technical competence relating to the accredited tests and its quality management system, in accordance with the UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard: “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”.
The Laboratories deal with the organization of test runs up to speeds 10% higher than the maximum line speed limit using the high-speed test train ETR 500 Y1 “Aiace”, ensuring tests and measurements for the technical and functional verification of already operational infrastructure and entry into service of rail routes and new and enhanced infrastructure and their certification/approval.


 


Laboratories support research, experimentation and the introduction of new technologies, and help verify new applications in the field, in all rail sectors, to improve traffic quality and regularity.

 
Environment and Safety Laboratory
  • Noise measurement;
  • Mechanical vibration measurement (whole body and hand-arm vibration);
  • EMF (Electromagnetic Field) measurement;
  • AOR (Artificial Optical Radiation) Measurement;
  • Radon Gas Measurement;
  • Microclimate measurement;
  • Illuminance measurement;
  • Measurement of Speech Intelligibility (STIPA);
  • Measurement for type approval of rolling stock (noise emissions, Track Decay Rates and rail roughness);
  • Technical design of noise control systems (noise barriers);
  • Noise impact assessment;
  • Provide technical expertise for litigation.
 
Mechanical Testing Laboratory
  • Center of calibration relative to force magnitude;
  • Dynamic testing on steel, concrete and rail components (welded rail length, glued joints, etc.);
  • Steel hardness testing;
  • Dynamic and static testing on rail-tie coupling systems;
  • Clamping force testing on rail-tie coupling systems;
  • Electrical resistance testing on rail-tie coupling systems;
  • Stress testing of longitudinal rail restraint on rail-tie coupling systems;
  • Tensile testing on plastics and elastomers;
  • Compression testing on plastics and elastomers;
  • Flexural testing on plastics and elastomers;
  • Hardness testing on plastics and elastomers;
  • Resilience testing on plastics and elastomers;
  • Tear strength testing on plastics and elastomers;
 
Civil Engineering Works Laboratory
  • Vibration monitoring on civil and rail buildings;
  • Acceleration measurement on rail infrastructure and civil engineering works (bridges, viaducts, tunnels, switch blocks, ties, etc.);
  • Strain measurement on rail infrastructure and civil engineering works;
  • Displacement measurement on rail infrastructure and civil engineering works;
  • Temperature measurement on rail infrastructure and civil engineering works;
  • Tensile measurement on rail infrastructure and civil engineering works.
 
Climate Chamber
  • ATP testing on transport equipment;
  • Temperature testing on rail systems;
  • Temperature testing on rolling stock.
 
Electrical Energy
  • Electromagnetic compatibility measurement between electric drive systems;
  • Wayside electrical safety measurement. Wayside contact voltages in accordance with EN 50122;
  • Measurement and testing on equipment and components of electric drive systems;
  • Uplift measurement of contact line when pushed by pantographs of passing trains;
  • Measurement of pantograph-catenary interaction quality and collection quality, for TSI certification of the overhead contact lines and the performance evaluation of pantographs.
 
New Technologies
  • Air Gap;
  • Design of performance monitoring systems for train-borne signaling technologies;
  • Measurement and testing on ERTMS/ETCS level 1 interface subsystems;
  • ATC. European compliance tests/simulations for ERTMS/ETCS system's vital computers;
  • Compatibility testing between control, command, and trackside signaling subsystems;
  • Monitoring of technical interface parameters.
 
Special Measurements
  • Design, organization, implementation of ad-hoc measurements and tests for researching, experimenting, verifying and putting into service infrastructure and rail facilities' components and systems.
